How to install software in fedora 10 from source

I am windows user but recently i sometime use fedora, Mac OSX. This is very common problem to fedora new user to install any software from source, same happened to me. Here are few steps/tips what to do to setup software in fedora 10.

1. Open gnome terminal( Press alt+F2 then type gnome-terminal to open this)

2. Get source gz file from software site using wget or anything you want. here is command to get gftp

# wget http://gftp.seul.org/gftp-2.0.19.tar.gz

3. After downloaded it, you have to unzip this file. Though there are fewer formats of compressed files, unzip command will vary. To unzip above file, run following command

# tar -zxvf gftp-2.0.19.tar.gz

to extract bz2 execute collowing command

# tar -jxvf gftp-2.0.19.tar.bz2

To extract on specific folder this will be like

#tar -xvzf file.tar.gz -C directory

4. So you have the unzipped files. No go inside this folder using following command

# cd gftp-2.0.19

5. Before start installation, you have to switch to root user by

# su

with the root password. Then to generate makefile execute the following command

# ./configure

You may see following error message if you don’t have gcc library

configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

That’s mean you don’t have the gcc package. To install any package in fedora 10 using yum is extremely easy. To install gc package, execute the following command.

# yum install gcc

To find a package using yum

# yum search searchword

If you see this error message “configure: error: C++ compiler cannot create executables”, install c++ by executing below

# yum install gcc-c++

In this way you can install any package in fedora 10 using yum. After install the missing package again execute the configure command.

6. Then execute configure command again. If you see the following error

checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool

Install parser package

# yum install perl-XML-Parser

In this way, install missing packages you need.
Then execute the make command

# make

7. Then execute the install command which is

# make install

To install soft from rpm is more easy, type following in terminal

# rpm –ivh packagename
# to upgrade a package
# rpm –Uvh packagename

If you have Internet access, you can also install local files by doing:

#yum --nogpgcheck localinstall filename.rpm

More helps online 😉
